Wet weather at Misano resulted in chaos

The San Marino Moto2 and Moto3 Grands Prix were held in terrible weather this year and the result was that 41 riders ended up crashing across both races! Thankfully everyone escaped serious injury. The racing was a test of survival as any rider who stayed upright (or got back on the bike after a spill) was able to score serious points.

Moto3: Jaume Masia made a stunning Moto3 debut in Austria

Juame Masia, just 16 years old, charged from 14th on the grid to 2nd at one point during the Austrian Moto3 GP with a string of brilliant overtaking manoeuvres (scooping fastest lap on the way). Also impressive is that once Masia reached 2nd place he signalled to the other riders to follow in his slipstream – rather than overtake – so they could catch the leader. It’s amazing for someone so young in their first Grand Prix to have that sort of confidence.

Vale Angel Nieto

The Jerez circuit will be renamed in honour of Angel Nieto who lost his life in a traffic accident last week. Nieto was the first Spaniard to win a motorcycle World Championship and he went on to become the 3rd most successful Grand Prix rider of all time. Nieto popularised the sport in Spain and helped pave the way for younger Spanish riders to follow the same path. Since then Spaniards have won a massive 46 world titles which means naming the Spanish Grand Prix venue in his honour is a very fitting tribute.

A new record was set during the Italian Moto3 Grand Prix

In Sunday’s Moto3 race at Mugello the rider who finished 20th reached the chequered flag just 3.05 seconds behind the winner. That makes it the closest top 20 finish in any Grand Prix motorcycle race in history.

An oil spill wreaked havoc in the French Moto3 Grand Prix

Half the Moto3 field ended up sliding out at the same corner in a crazy incident on lap one at Le Mans. Plenty of riders made contact with other bikes in the gravel trap so it was lucky that nobody was seriously injured.

Some interesting stats from the MotoGP weekend at Sepang

  • 17 riders crashed during a bizarre Moto3 race, including the top 6 in the championship. 3 of the 4 leaders even crashed at the same corner (5:50 into this video) and everyone who stayed upright was able to score points.
  • Sam Lowes fell during the Moto2 race which, incredibly, was his 30th crash of the season.
  • In the 51 GP races this year (across Moto3, Moto2 & MotoGP) there have been 25 different winners. That’s incredible – and there are still 3 races left to boost the record!

2016 has been an incredible season of Grand Prix motorcycling

There have been a total of 22 different winners across MotoGP, Moto2 & Moto3, including 8 different winners in 8 consecutive MotoGP races (an all-time record). 22 winners in a season is astonishing, especially with 5 rounds still to go, and it has never happened before in the modern 3-class era.

MotoGP: There were some great stories to come out of Brno

Cal Crutchlow scored his first MotoGP victory at Brno and did so under exceptional circumstances. Cal had to fight back from 15th place on lap 3 and ended up overtaking almost the entire field in changeable conditions. That’s a great way to win any Grand Prix let alone your first! It was quite fitting that Crutchlow broke the 35-year victory drought for British riders whilst riding bike number 35.

John McPhee also took his first Grand Prix victory at Brno although he came under immense pressure at the end of the Moto3 race when he almost threw it all away. McPhee’s tyres started to give out and with just a few laps to go he had a wild highside coming out of Turn 13. Incredibly, he landed back on his bike and kept it all together to reach the finish. It was a heart-in-mouth moment that McPhee could’ve done without whilst fighting for his first win.

Marc Marquez started his Brno pole position lap right behind Valentino Rossi, and whilst he made gains in Rossi’s slipstream, he had to overtake Valentino at the end of the lap to realise the full benefit. The result was a brilliant (and aggressive) move briefly caught at 25 seconds on the highlights video below. It was pretty special to see pole position decided by a wheel-to-wheel battle in qualifying between two bitter rivals.

Moto3 is producing another great season in 2016

Moto3 usually produces exciting mixed-up racing and the following stats show 2016 has been no exception:

* In 11 races this year there have been 8 different winners – 6 of them winning for the very first time.
* Just 1 race this year has been won from pole position.
* Only 2 riders have scored multiple wins, but one of them is down in 11th place in the championship.
