F1: Sebastian Vettel keeps making lap one mistakes

Sebastian Vettel has been involved in a lot of first lap accidents, especially for a 4x World Champion who usually starts races up front away from trouble. Vettel certainly isn’t to blame for every one of those incidents but even before hitting Verstappen and Hamilton in Mexico, he has shown he can create risky situations with careless manoeuvres and/or poor spatial awareness. In the words of Mark Webber “I think sometimes Seb forgets that where the back of his helmet is is not where the back of his car is.”

A possible Formula E circuit in Sydney

Rumours of an Australian Formula E race have never eventuated but the perfect venue is ready and waiting near the heart of Sydney. A former container port under Anzac Bridge (recently used as an exhibition precinct) offers Sydney the chance to join Rome, Paris, New York and Hong Kong with a cheap and environmentally friendly alternative to Formula 1.

Wet weather at Misano resulted in chaos

The San Marino Moto2 and Moto3 Grands Prix were held in terrible weather this year and the result was that 41 riders ended up crashing across both races! Thankfully everyone escaped serious injury. The racing was a test of survival as any rider who stayed upright (or got back on the bike after a spill) was able to score serious points.

The wet GP2 race at Monza was fantastic

The GP2 sprint race at Monza was an action-packed affair and a late safety car meant it all came down to a wild 2 lap sprint at the finish. If you’ve got a few spare minutes it’s worth checking out.

IndyCar: Josef Newgarden made a huge move at Gateway

Josef Newgarden’s overtake for victory late in the IndyCar race at Gateway was an interesting moment in the championship fight. All four Team Penske drivers were in contention for this year’s title and although 2017 is Newgarden’s first year with the team, he had built a healthy points lead. Shoving one of his teammates aside for victory helped to assert Newgarden’s place in the Penske hierarchy, and it also showed plenty of confidence, no fear of conflict, and that he wasn’t taking the safe option of settling for points.

Moto3: Jaume Masia made a stunning Moto3 debut in Austria

Juame Masia, just 16 years old, charged from 14th on the grid to 2nd at one point during the Austrian Moto3 GP with a string of brilliant overtaking manoeuvres (scooping fastest lap on the way). Also impressive is that once Masia reached 2nd place he signalled to the other riders to follow in his slipstream – rather than overtake – so they could catch the leader. It’s amazing for someone so young in their first Grand Prix to have that sort of confidence.

IndyCar: Will Power’s victory at Pocono was remarkable

Australian driver Will Power scored a particularly special victory in the Pocono 500 having made four extra pitstops compared to most of the other race leaders. Power’s additional stops (two for damage) meant he had to work through the yellow flag periods to come from a lap behind to win. That might be common on the short oval circuits but not the long 2.5 mile triangle at Pocono.
