A summary of the big talking points in Formula E

Every season has featured at least 5 different winners.
The racing in Formula E is consistently close and exciting. 20 different drivers have made it onto the podium which is a pretty good mix from just 33 races.

The biggest rivalry is between Lucas di Grassi and Sebastien Buemi.
Incredibly, the first 3 Formula E championships went down to the very last race and all three finales featured Lucas di Grassi and Sebastien Buemi in title contention. They have consistently been the two stand-out drivers in the series and their rivalry became particularly heated when the two crashed in the second of those championship deciders.

Sebastien Buemi is the most successful Formula E driver but keeps making lots of mistakes.
Although it isn’t fair to play hypotheticals, Sebastien Buemi could be a triple Formula E champion if he made fewer mistakes. In 31 races he made 20 notable errors which is an awful lot for the series’ most successful driver. His main rival, Lucas di Grassi, called him out on it earlier this year saying Buemi “has pressure big time …. this is because everyone will be waiting to see if those mistakes come again”.

Renault are the team to beat but could be challenged by Mahindra.
Renault have taken almost three times as many victories as the next most successful Formula E team and they have built the fastest car for the last two seasons (which is impressive when the regulations are so tight). However, Mahindra took more podiums than any other team last season and Felix Rosenqvist was the strongest driver in the second half of the championship. If that momentum carries over into Season 4, Rosenqvist and Mahindra will be serious title contenders.

Manufacturers are rushing into the series.
Formula E is starting to go through a boom in manufacturer interest which is helping to grow the championship. Audi joins this season with a full factory team, whilst BMW, Mercedes, Porsche, and Nissan on the way. Not only that but the Fiat/Chrysler Group have expressed an interest and McLaren is supplying equipment so there are lots of industry connections starting to develop.

Season 4 kicks off in Hong Kong this coming weekend.

The 2017 Supercars championship went down to the final seconds

he 2017 Supercars championship finale was an all-time classic and the last few laps are captured in this very entertaining video. Scott McLaughlin only had to finish 11th in the final race to seal the title (which looked easy from pole position) but multiple collisions and penalties saw him sitting 12th in the dying stages. Incredibly, McLaughlin made the forceful overtaking manoeuvre he desperately needed to become 2017 champion only to run wide 2 corners later and trigger another collision. The subsequent last lap penalty meant the championship was undecided right up until chequered flag.

F3: The Macau Grand Prix was a last lap thriller

If you haven’t yet seen the finish to last weekend’s Macau F3 Grand Prix it is well worth checking out. The two leaders threw everything at victory and it all came down to a wild final corner where both drivers had their own separate accidents.

MotoGP: This is one of the most amazing things you’ll ever see in a championship decider

Marc Marquez only had to stay upright in Valencia to be crowned 2017 MotoGP World Champion but incredibly he threw it all away – and then gathered it back up again – in one wild 135kph manoeuvre. Marquez is known for his brilliant saves but has never done something like that with so much at stake.

Jonathan Rea’s dominance of the World Superbike Championship is astonishing

Over the last 3 years Jonathan Rea has won more races than every other rider combined and has achieved a 90% strike rate for reaching the podium. Even more impressive is that Rea’s success continued when the series introduced jumbled grids to mix up the order. And if you think it’s all about the bike, Rea’s Kawasaki teammate is the 6th most successful WorldSBK rider of all time, so isn’t exactly a pushover.

Last week Ferrari threatened to quit Formula One

That sounds quite drastic, but it’s worth remembering Ferrari boycotted races to prove a point or made similar threats to quit in 1950, 1953, 1964, 1966, 1968, 1976, 1981, 1986, 2002, 2005, 2007, 2008, 2009, 2011, 2014, and 2015.

There was late drama in the Austrian Formula 3 round

Lando Norris only had to complete the final lap at the Red Bull Ring to be crowned 2017 champion. Incredibly, he was taken out by another driver with just a few corners to go, and although he is still favourite to wrap up the title in a few weeks’ time, Norris was distraught to get so incredibly close but still miss out.

MotoGP: Valentino Rossi qualifying 3rd just 3 weeks after breaking his leg is amazing

Rossi’s efforts recovering from a broken leg are incredible, but there also some extreme stories from the past. A week before the 1925 Monza GP Tazio Nuvolari crashed at the circuit and broke both his legs. He returned to Monza for the race with his legs in plaster casts and took part by tying himself to the bike and having his mechanics hold him upright at the start. Nuvolari overtook the whole field and won.
